velocities    音标拼音: [vəl'ɑsətiz]
Velocity \Ve*loc"i*ty\, n.; pl. {Velocities}. [L. velocitas,
from velox, -ocis, swift, quick; perhaps akin to volare to
fly (see {Volatile}): cf. F. v['e]locit['e].]
[1913 Webster]
1. Quickness of motion; swiftness; speed; celerity; rapidity;
as, the velocity of wind; the velocity of a planet or
comet in its orbit or course; the velocity of a cannon
ball; the velocity of light.
[1913 Webster]

Note: In such phrases, velocity is more generally used than
celerity. We apply celerity to animals; as, a horse or
an ostrich runs with celerity; but bodies moving in the
air or in ethereal space move with greater or less
velocity, not celerity. This usage is arbitrary, and
perhaps not universal.
[1913 Webster]

2. (Mech.) Rate of motion; the relation of motion to time,
measured by the number of units of space passed over by a
moving body or point in a unit of time, usually the number
of feet passed over in a second. See the Note under
{Speed}.
[1913 Webster]

{Angular velocity}. See under {Angular}.

{Initial velocity}, the velocity of a moving body at
starting; especially, the velocity of a projectile as it
leaves the mouth of a firearm from which it is discharged.

{Relative velocity}, the velocity with which a body
approaches or recedes from another body, whether both are
moving or only one.

{Uniform velocity}, velocity in which the same number of
units of space are described in each successive unit of
time.

{Variable velocity}, velocity in which the space described
varies from instant to instant, either increasing or
decreasing; -- in the former case called accelerated
velocity, in the latter, retarded velocity; the
acceleration or retardation itself being also either
uniform or variable.

{Virtual velocity}. See under {Virtual}.
[1913 Webster]

Note: In variable velocity, the velocity, strictly, at any
given instant, is the rate of motion at that instant,
and is expressed by the units of space, which, if the
velocity at that instant were continued uniform during
a unit of time, would be described in the unit of time;
thus, the velocity of a falling body at a given instant
is the number of feet which, if the motion which the
body has at that instant were continued uniformly for
one second, it would pass through in the second. The
scientific sense of velocity differs from the popular
sense in being applied to all rates of motion, however
slow, while the latter implies more or less rapidity or
quickness of motion.
[1913 Webster]

Syn: Swiftness; celerity; rapidity; fleetness; speed.
[1913 Webster]

  • Velocity - Wikipedia
Velocity is defined as the rate of change of position with respect to time, which may also be referred to as the instantaneous velocity to emphasize the distinction from the average velocity
  • Velocity: Definition, Examples, Formula, and Solved Problems
Velocity is the rate at which an object changes position with time An object is displaced when it changes its position The amount of displacement over the time in which the displacement occurred gives the velocity It is a vector quantity that has both magnitude and direction
  • Speed and Velocity - Math is Fun
Velocity is speed with a direction Saying Ariel the Dog runs at 9 km h (kilometers per hour) is a speed But saying he runs 9 km h Westwards is a velocity Imagine something moving back and forth very fast: it has a high speed, but a low (or zero) velocity Speed is measured as distance moved over time Example: A car travels 50 km in one hour
  • VELOCITY Definition Meaning - Merriam-Webster
The meaning of VELOCITY is quickness of motion : speed How to use velocity in a sentence
  • Velocity | Speed, Acceleration, Motion | Britannica
velocity, quantity that designates how fast and in what direction a point is moving A point always moves in a direction that is tangent to its path; for a circular path, for example, its direction at any instant is perpendicular to a line from the point to the centre of the circle (a radius)
  • What is Velocity? - GeeksforGeeks
Velocity is defined as the rate of change of the position of the object with respect to a frame of reference and time Velocity is a vector measure of the speed and direction of movement Simply put, velocity is the pace at which something moves in a particular direction
  • 2. 3: Time, Velocity, and Speed - Physics LibreTexts
Explain the relationships between instantaneous velocity, average velocity, instantaneous speed, average speed, displacement, and time Calculate velocity and speed given initial position, initial time, final position, and final time There is more to motion than distance and displacement
  • Velocities - definition of velocities by The Free Dictionary
Like speed, velocity refers to the rate at which an object is moving—the distance per unit of time But velocity in physics also includes the direction in which the object is moving, whereas direction has no bearing on an object's speed
  • Understanding Velocity in Physics: A Comprehensive Guide
Mathematically, velocity is the rate of change of a position, called displacement, with respect to time in a given direction Velocity in mathematical terms can be represented as: v = dtdr = timeDisplacement Here: t is the time The SI unit of Velocity, just like speed, is m s or ms-1
  • Velocity – Introductory Physics: Classical Mechanics
We have learned how to use vectors to describe the position and displacement of an object We can now turn to describing how objects move The movement of an object is described by its velocity The velocity tells us: how fast an object is moving in which direction is the object moving
